SUN EFFECTS ON MATURE SKIN

As we age our skin care needs change, we cannot continue following the same skin care regimen as we did in our youthful years. Mature skin needs a lot more intentional care and specific products made to target problems faced by aging skin. Today I would like to share a few things we need to focus on to make sure skin is cared for appropriately.

SUN PROTECTION.

I live in the tropics where the sun is up 365 days of the year. It can get really hot and it is easy to get sun burn by just being outdoors for a couple of hours, sunscreen is therefore of great importance to my skincare routine and I plan to persuade you in this article, why its important, and why you too should make sunscreen a constant part of your daily skincare regimen.

Too much exposure to the ultra violet or UV rays can cause extensive damage to skin cell and at worst kill them altogether.its important to limit the amount of time you spend in the sun especially during the hottest parts of the day, over exposure to the sun rays over along period is dangerous and is the leading cause of skin cancer which has a way of sneaking up when we are aging. Amazingly research now shows that the UV rays has the capacity to damage chromosomes inside the cells that are not directly exposed, according to Dr Michael Roizen MD, chief of wellness for the Cleveland clinic.

The damage this causes to the skin is great and may not be reparable. The skin becomes discolored, you develop sun spots, freckles, cataract, uneven skin tone, wrinkles, and loss of elasticity, Its therefore important to use suns screen daily to keep the skin protected, and to help correct some damage if you already have them, as an older woman myself I can see some of these damage already manifesting in my skin and my hope is that all is not in vain, I know that nothing can completely restore my skin to its youthful former glory after years of sun damage but with subtle changes to my skincare regimen like the use of quality sunscreen daily can help me delay some of these signs of aging especially cancers of the skin.

HOW TO WEAR SUNSCREEN.

If we fail to cover up, then our skin will start to deteriorate and show signs of neglect. .

It is advisable to wear suns screen daily few minutes before going out into the sun.if you spend a lot of time outdoors then its only prudent to consider covering up even if you have darker skin tones.

Cover up the exposed body areas by wearing long sleeved clothes, hats and sun glasses when spending loads of time outside.

Note that SPF is not a green light to stay outdoors exposed for long periods of time, if you have no choice then reapply sunscreen after few hours to help boost the protection, use of sunscreen does not mean you are protected from all the harmful effects of the sun.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN SHOPPING FOR SUN SCREEN

Choose a broad spectrum suns screen that will block both UV-A and UV-B.

Keep in mind that the best suns screen for you does not have to be expensive, some budget friendly sun screens can be just as effective.

Choose one with SPF, the minimum should be 15, there are lots of great sunscreens of SPF over 30 that are quite popular among users, the truth is there are many to choose from. Do a patch test and if an allergic reaction occurs don’t despair, just try a different brand or form, the market is diverse

NEWS ON THE HORIZON.

There’s word on the grapevine of a new sun protection that is undergoing tests and is expected to be the real deal. It is a chemical known as mexolyl which is packed with an SPF of 60 and provides more protection than all the products in the market today.

As we speak its already in the European and Australian markets, as we await for mexoryl to be approved by the US Food and Drug administration -FDA, there’s no need to despair my ladies, because as I said earlier, there’s no shortage of good quality sunscreens in the market to choose from so Let’s take our skin seriously and start treating it well . Slather on some suns screen to keep premature aging at bay. Love your skin and protect it from the harmful rays of the sun and you will be glad because your skin will love you right back and the results will be an amazing skin that ages gracefully and beautifully.

Don’t we all just want great skin? I am here to tell you its possible, it all depends on what you are willing to do about it.

“The skin Cancer Foundation”SAYS…..

Regular use of sunscreen can prevent cancer and wrinkles, so for all the ladies here seeking to age gracefully, sunscreen is a must go to skincare product. If you have neglected it before, I suggest you go to the store and grab yourself one and start using it daily, because all indications are that it is good for our skin.

In the near future, I will do some product review for best suns screen products for women over 50 so stay tuned. I hope that in this article I have been able to persuade you that even in your senior years you can still look great and have beautiful skin if you start to protect and care for it, and you can age well like fine wine as I always say.

I am optimistic that we will be great learners that are willing to learn new tricks no matter our age, remember age is just a number and should not change how we take care of ourselves.

Please drop me a line in the comment area below about what your experience with sunscreens has been like and any thoughts you may have on the broad subject of skincare, I would really love to hear from you and will definitely have a look at them. Feel free to share with me which sunscreen is your best.

All the best beauties

  1. Sunscreen protection is very important. I am not over 50 yet, however I will be soon so I am glad you wrote this article. For years I heard about using a sunscreen with broad spectrum in it so I have been looking for that in every sunscreen I shop for. That’s great about the new sun protection mexoryl. I have never heard of it before so I will certainly be looking for products that have that ingredient in it. I want all the SPF I can get! Thanks again for pointing out what a lot of people forget about.

    1. Thank you so much Jennifer for your comment, will keep you updated on all the news on sunscreens ,it’s indeed very important for our overall wellbeing, very glad you stopped by.

  2. I completely agree with you that SPF is so important, no matter how old you are. I’ve always used sunscreen because when I was younger I would get really bad sunburn on my nose and cheeks. And now that I’m getting older, I really try to take care of my skin. I want to look good as I get older lol. Now I use a moisturizer with SPF everyday. Protecting my skin not only because of aging but also because the idea of getting skin cancer really scares me

  3. Hello there,

Thank you for this very informative article. I remember when I was still living in a tropic country, before I moved to Europe, sun is like a burning king when you go outside. I remember wearing long sleeves just to protect my skin – by the way I get sun allergies (small blisters) if I get too much sun exposure. So, sunscreen is really important for me – although I’m not over 50 yet.

When I moved to Europe – sun is not that harsh but I need to take daily vitamin D supplements with a little bit high dosis prescribed by my doctor – due to my skin color.

Thanks for this great post. I’ll be looking forward to your product reviews soon. 😉

    Best regards & God bless,

    Che
